This news story may seem a bit outdated (2007 compared to the year 2009), however a resurgence of images has taken to appearing on the web. Image—Amazing image, isn’t it? A pink bottlenose dolphin. Previously, a South-Asian dolphin and the Amazon River Dolphins were the only ‘pink’ dolphins that had been sited. I place the word pink in brackets because in reality, the dolphin is not pink. Yes, the dolphin appears to be pink in the image, and to the naked eye, the pigmentation would appear pink, but alas! That is not the reality.
In reality, the dolphin is an albino bottlenose dolphin. For whatever reason (research appears to indicate that environment did not play a role), recessive genes were at the fore in this dolphin. Other pictures reveal the red eyes of the dolphin currently residing in Louisiana.
The pink color of the dolphin (as opposed to the normal white of albinos) is due to the blood vessels that cover the whole skin. Thus, the reason the dolphin looks like a color Barbie would wear.
All pictures of the albino, fondly (and rather unimaginatively) call Pinky, has a normal colored dolpin in it. The dolphin is assumed to be the mother for the scientific reason that mothers tend to stay with animals that are different.
Overall, the image presented here certainly mandates that a person marvel at Nature. An albino dolphin is by no means a fantastical showcase of Nature’s power (cat 5 Hurricane’s, tornadoes, tsunamis and the like do) but rather a subtle reminder that everything in Nature is fantastical and wondrous because even the ‘mundane’ has variation.
Where have all the hedgehogs gone? How does one miss the fact that hedgehogs are missing? Especially when Hedgehogs are so adorable!
According to a BBC Report, over 50% of the hedgehogs have disappeared over the past decade! In fact, the hedgehog could be on its way to extinction! In a world where we are aware of animals and how to prevent (think Panda), how can we not be stopping the hedgehogs?
Another question that arises: why did we miss the hedgehog crisis? How could we miss the fact that the change in the weather could cause issues for the hedgehog babies?
I think it is very sad and hope that England does something to save the hedgehog because they are very adorable and are an icon from my generation with the Sonic the Hedgehog video game.
There are certain things that one can witness, or read about, that give a moment to pause and just scratch one’s head in befuddlement. This story is certainly one of those stories. It makes you wonder just what happened precisely and if one variably had changed—would the outcome have varied dramatically?
It was a brisk winter day somewhere in a hilly portion of Germany. Snow whitened a normally dark green landscape, bringing about what could be deemed bleak atmosphere if it weren’t for the smattering of buildings that destroyed that illusion.
Somewhere, within the hills, what I would imagine to be a nice German, got in his car and drove off. As he drove down a slope, he picked up speed. he thought nothing of it, continuing with his acceleration. He reached the bottom of the hill, immediately starting back up on another hill. Perhaps that is why he thought it a good idea to continue with his acceleration.
It is hard to say whether it was the slick roads or just per dumb luck. At the top of the hill, the car launched into the air! Police, who were on that hill, scratched their heads as they watched the car sail through the air—landing with a resounding thud on top of a church building.
I must say, I do not know what is more memorable about this story—the cops who were there to witness it; the fact that the guy kept accelerating; or the fact that he landed on a church building and walked away.
